LAUNCH OF UNIQUE FORENSIC COURSES AT UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER

Post Mortem Radiology for natural and forensic death investigation announced

New forensic courses are to be launched at the University of Leicester and will be the first of their type in the UK.

The postgraduate courses at the University - where the technique of DNA Fingerprinting was invented – are housed in the University of Leicester’s East Midlands Forensic Pathology Unit and Imaging Unit, global pioneers in the field of post-mortem computed tomography imaging.

The following three courses are being offered:

PG Cert Post Mortem Radiology for Natural and Forensic Death Investigation

PG Dip Post Mortem Radiology for Natural and Forensic Death Investigation

MSc Post Mortem Radiology for Natural and Forensic Death Investigation

Professor Guy Rutty, Chief Forensic Pathologist from the University of Leicester, said: “It is critical to have courses such as this to enable future autopsy practitioners to develop postgraduate skills for practice within the field. It is unique in that it covers both natural and unnatural death imaging, mass fatalities and identification as well as practical imaging skills and techniques and how to set up and run a service.

“There is only one other course to our knowledge in this field in the world. It is the first course of its type in the UK, which will be delivered by international pioneers within the field using an extensive ethically approved and consented teaching autopsy matched dataset in a new teaching facility.”

Professor Rutty added that autopsy practice is changing around the world with the use of post-mortem computed tomography as an adjunct or replacement to the traditional invasive autopsy in both natural and suspicious death investigation.

He said: “This range of post-graduate degrees are offered to enhance an individual’s knowledge, practical skills and diagnostic confidence in the field of post-mortem imaging with the chance to study with the University of Leicester’s East Midlands Forensic Pathology Unit and Imaging Unit, global pioneers in the field of post-mortem computed tomography imaging.

“The courses can be studied full time or part time. Individual modules from the course are also available as CPD courses. Each module consists of 5 days on campus teaching with distant blended learning.”

Professor Bruno Morgan, Lead Forensic Radiologist from the University of Leicester, said: “It is really exciting to finally offer this course, having developed experience and teaching material from interpreting hundreds of post-mortem investigations over the last 10 years, firstly as part of research projects with learning from autopsy control, and now also as part of service to our communities.”
