In the last year Police Mutual has given £100,000 to 279 successful local projects throughout the country through its award winning[1] community sponsorship programme, Force for Good. From 1 September 2016, as Police Mutual begins to celebrate its 150th anniversary of helping serving and retired Police Officers, Staff, Specials and their families with their finances, it will award a further £50,000 to local projects.

As a not-for-profit yet commercially run organisation, Police Mutual’s financial strength and performance allows it to give back to its key stakeholder group, the Police. To date Force for Good has received a total of 2,639 applications nationwide following its launch on 1 September 2015. The initiative is funded by the Police Mutual Foundation, which has been supporting the wellbeing of the wider Police family since 2011.

Stephen Mann, Chief Executive of Police Mutual, explains: “At Police Mutual we are passionate about improving financial, mental, physical and community wellbeing. Force for Good enables the Police family to identify and give back to causes close to their hearts, which they feel will improve the lives and wellbeing of those within their local communities. We have been amazed by the vast quantity and continuous quality of entries received, and are now delighted to be launching the third phase of the initiative.”

Applications are open to a wide spread of community initiatives:

  • Youth groups and activities
  • Support for the vulnerable
  • Gardens, farms and allotments
  • Scouts, guides and cadets
  • Crime prevention
  • Community activities and facilities

A high proportion of nominations made by Police Officers and Specials to date have resulted from their local Policing work. One example isHampshire Police Constable, Kerry Snuggs, who nominated Fareham and Gosport based ‘Acts of Kindness’. Its 1,500 members regularly carry out good deeds locally, which have improved community cohesion.

September 2016 nominations

The second 2016 nomination window runs from 1 to 30 September. The Police family are invited to nominate good causes in their local area that enhance the lives and wellbeing of the community. Applications for funding can be made for any amount up to £1,000 to support a local initiative.
