Detective Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert

Northumbria Police has a new top detective in charge of crime.

Detective Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert, aged 51, has taken up his new role in charge of investigating homicides, organised crime, major crime enquiries, protecting vulnerable people, covert policing and criminal justice for the force.

He has spent most of his 28-years police service as a detective, including working as a senior investigating officer in charge of a number of murder investigations.

In 2004, he was the Northumbria Police link for international support following the devastating Boxing Day Asian Tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Det Ch Supt Calvert said: “I’ll be building on the successful work of my predecessor and I’m looking forward to helping our communities, making sure crime victims of serious offences get the help and support they need from the time the offence is reported right through to a conviction at court.”

Det Ch Supt Calvert’s most recent role was acting as a temporary Assistant Chief Constable since November and before that as area commander in charge of policing in Newcastle. He replaces temporary Det Ch Supt Debbie Ford who moves to a Communications Department.
