Harrow Police's inter-faith cricket tournament reached a thrilling climax

Wednesday, 07 July, 2010

The final of the month-long competition was between the Sri Lankan Muslim Cultural Centre from Wealdstone and the Islamic Centre from Wood Lane, Stanmore and was played in bright evening sunshine at Harrow Recreation Ground.

The match was watched by the Mayor of Harrow Cllr Asad Omar, the Chair of the Harrow Police Community Consultative Group, Mrs Sonoo Malkani and Harrow Police Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Dal Babu.

Batting first, the Wood Lane Islamic Centre reached 108-6 from their 15 overs. In response the SLMCC scored 108-7 to send the match into a bowl out (cricket's equivalent of a penalty shoot out).

The tension mounted still further when after five balls from each team, the scores were still level, sending the match into a sudden death decider. Eventually Mohamed Imtiyas (pictured) broke the deadlock to with the bowl out, the match and the tournament for the Sri Lankan Muslim Cultural Centre.

Man of the match was Mohamed Imran who top scored with 45 runs including some towering sixes and took two wickets.

Headstone South Police Community Support Officer Imran Hayder who organised the tournament said:

"This year's tournament has been a great success. We have been supported by all sectors of the community - I would particularly like to thank all the teams who participated."
