Tuesday, 08 June, 2010

Youngsters from Wyre will be representing their country - and many others - as they take part in their very own World Cup.

Teams from Preesall, Garstang and Fleetwood will be taking part in the special event at Fleetwood Sports College this Friday.

The event, run by Wyre Borough Council's community sports team in conjunction with local police officers, is an extension of the Football Foundation funded TryFootball scheme, which is aimed at providing positive activities for children to minimise juvenile anti-social behaviour.

Teams will be transported to the venue, before picking the country they will represent out of a hat. A round robin tournament will then take place, with each player receiving a t-shirt and medal. The winners will be presented with their very own World Cup trophy. Free food, and a separate activity for those not inspired by football, will be provided by Lancashire Association of Clubs for Young people. (LACYP) and funded by the Young People Service.

Ashley Hackett, Wyre Borough Council's community sports co-ordinator, said: "The event coincides with the opening of the World Cup and gives the youngsters the chance to feel involved in the celebrations by having their own tournament.

"The Try Team Football scheme allows those who may not get the chance to play for school teams the opportunity top get involved in the game, and their participation in this event is based on their attendance and behaviour at previous sessions."

PC Derek Snalam, Lancashire Police youth involvement officer, said: "This is a really positive activity that gives youngsters something to do on a Friday night, hopefully reducing instances of anti-social behaviour."
