The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is divided into six  comprehensive Units:

Unit 1: The Learning Environment
Learners will explore the context in which learning takes place, as well as the underlying structures, policies and procedures that are applicable to a particular educational establishment. There will also be an opportunity to examine aspects of the legislative framework, especially those that relate to health and safety and safeguarding children.

Learners will also be able to explore their own role within a complex organisation, and their relationships with teachers, other colleagues and pupils. There is scope for learners to prepare resources, materials and recording documentation to support particular areas of the curriculum.

Unit 2: Supporting Classroom Practices

The unit enables learners to acquire a range of support skills as well as investigate a range of strategies to support pupils within the classroom.

Learners should gain experience of observing individual pupils, planning learning activities and supporting classroom practice.

Learners will need to develop confidence and competence in using classroom observations to gain information about pupils’ individual needs and how to use this information as a basis for planning. The unit will also help learners understand how to provide feedback to teachers on the progress of individual pupils.

Unit 3: Supporting Literacy and Numeracy

Learners will examine national initiatives, and develop and use practical skills to support learning.

The unit enables learners to acquire a range of support skills as well as investigate a range of strategies to support the development of literacy and numeracy within the classroom.

Learners should gain experience of working with individual pupils, small groups and whole class groups. They should also work with pupils who require additional support in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

Learners will need to develop confidence and competence with numbers and measures, and this requires an understanding of the number system and an ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts.

The unit will also help learners understand the ways in which information is gathered using counting and measuring and how it is presented in graphs, diagrams and tables.

Unit 4: Supporting the use of Information and Communication Technology

The aim of the unit is for learners to develop an awareness of ICT tools and equipment, and of how to use these tools safely and effectively within the teaching and learning environment. It will also focus on how ICT can assist and support the teaching and learning process.

Learners will also benefit from the opportunity to use a range of ICT tools used in the classroom environment in order to support effective teaching and learning. The unit will help learners judge which type and level of equipment is required, know the methods used within a setting to book the equipment and how faults are reported.

Learners should have the opportunity to support pupils in a setting in the independent use of ICT, as well as ensuring that it is safely used. The overall unit focus is on gaining the knowledge and skills associated with ICT through research, investigation and practical application.

Unit 5: Supporting Pupils with Disabilities and Special Educational Needs

The aim of the unit is for learners to gain the relevant knowledge and understanding to enable them to support pupils with disabilities or special educational needs.

The unit will enable learners to gain understanding of how to support pupils with disabilities or special educational needs by researching the relevant information on the pupil’s needs and the legislation and codes of practice that may affect the pupil.

The learner will then be able to build on this and begin to understand how to help the pupil take part in activities, ensuring safety at all times. Learners will also gain an understanding of how to support the pupil and the pupil’s family. It also covers the concepts of partnership, integration and inclusion and the importance of seeking specialist help when required.

Unit 6: Supporting Play and Learning

The aim of the unit is for learners to gain knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to support all aspects of play and learning. They will understand the importance of play for the development of the child or young person, whether within the classroom or outdoors. Initially, learners will gain understanding of the different types of play and about the role of the adult in play activities. They will then go on to learn how to provide for pupils’ imaginative and creative play through the provision of resources, the encouragement of pupils and appropriate intervention.

They will also learn how to support, encourage and supervise physical play, and understand the benefits for pupils of this kind of play.

Finally, learners will gain an understanding of how to encourage pupils to explore and investigate through their play, the resources and adult support needed.
