Carlisle PC wins inspirational woman in policing award

Friday, 09 June, 2017

A Carlisle police officer has been announced as the winner of a national award by the British Association for Women in Policing (BAWP).

PC Debbie Hall is this year’s winner in the ‘Inspirational Woman’ category. The award is recognition for her determination to serve the community while battling cancer for the second time during her policing career.

Debbie will collect her award at a ceremony in North Lincolnshire on Tuesday 13th June.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer only four days before starting her policing career in 2003. Her determination to pursue her dream occupation was evident as she started later that year. From there she dedicated her time to balancing her career and duties as a police officer, her family life and an inspiring determination to raise as much money as possible for a number of cancer charities.

In 2015, Debbie was diagnosed with cancer for the second time but she did not let that defeat her. Instead she found a medical trial at Christies Hospital in Manchester and continued to raise thousands of pounds for charities.

Sergeant Chris Blain was one of the people who nominated Debbie, he said:

“Debbie is an inspiration to all that work with her and have those that have the pleasure of knowing her. Despite the setbacks she has never looked for pity or sympathy. She remains as committed as ever to improving the lives of those affected by cancer and equally the communities she serves as a police officer.

“I can't think of anybody more deserving of this award and I know that my sentiments are shared by those that work with her.”

Chief Inspector Rod Mackay said:

“I am so pleased for Debbie with the news of this much-deserved award. She is an inspiration to us all at Cumbria Constabulary for the selfless work she continues to do in raising awareness through her fundraising efforts.”

Deputy Chief Constable Michelle Skeer said:

“Debbie should be very proud of her achievement. She works tirelessly to balance her duties as a police officer, her family life and raising money and awareness for such worthy causes. She symbolises the meaning of this award and therefore is the perfect recipient.”

Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall said:

“I would like to add my congratulations to Debbie on her very well-deserved award.  She is clearly an inspiration to everyone who knows her, and has shown extraordinary grit and determination through some very challenging times.”

Debbie, who continues to receive treatment at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, has been a police officer for over 13 years.

Debbie is currently organising the ‘Let’s Make a Difference Charity Ball’ which is being held on 1st July at the Shepherds Inn, Carlisle. Doors open at 7pm for an evening of entertainment including the world’s number one Gary Barlow tribute act.
