Metropolitan Police Youth FC are about to launch three new youth teams, including a disability team, thanks to a £5,000 grant from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

The club will be presented with a giant cheque on Saturday 21 September 2013, 2.30pm at the Metropolitan Police Sports Ground, Imber Court, East Molesey Surrey, KT8 0BT by Ray Lewis and Les Pharo, President and Chairman of Surrey County FA respectively.

The grant will give more children and young people in Elmbridge and the surrounding Boroughs the opportunity to participate in football. It will also contribute towards qualifications for coaches at the club, which in turn will create even more opportunities for individual players by developing their performance and talent.

Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded over 9,000 grants worth more than £410m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £560m. Across Surrey, the Football Foundation has awarded 123 grants worth £10m towards grassroots sports projects worth £20m.

Frank Thompson, Director of the Youth Section at the Metropolitan Police FC, said: “This money will provide a great opportunity for children and young people to take part in football.

“The club are grateful to the Football Foundation and Caroline McRoyall of Surrey County FA, who have supported the project every step of the way. There is no doubt without this funding we would have struggled to get this project off the ground.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Today’s cheque presentation to Metropolitan Police Youth FC represents the culmination of lots of hard work between the club and the Surrey County FA. This £5000 grant will go towards a great opportunity to grow the game locally at this club and introduce more players to the sport in general.”

“Our funding partners, the Premier League, The FA and the Government (via Sport England), have been generously investing in this country’s grassroots projects, just like this one in Elmbridge, since 2000.”
