Borneo Calls Officer To Ultimate Charity Challenge

Tuesday, 30 March, 2010

Poppy-Grace is the inspiration behind her father's decision to take part in an ultimate challenge in Borneo.

North Manchester Neighbourhood Officer, PC Dave Stebbings, 29, is off to Borneo to take on an ultimate fitness challenge to raise money for charity.

A gruelling triathlon style challenge will see the North Manchester NPT officer cycling 170km through Borneo jungle, climbing Mount Kinabalu (4000 metres) and racing down River Padras as he raises money for the Make a Wish Foundation.

The charity grants wishes for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses, which is something that Dave feels passionate about after his daughter was born six weeks premature in 2007.

PC Stebbings said: "Poppy-Grace was kept in hospital for a period of time and we had to take her back for many follow up visits due to illness.

"Luckily she is a happy and healthy little girl now but the experience made me appreciate that some children are not as fortunate as Poppy and this is my chance to give something back, to help children and their families who need some support."

The Charlestown and Higher Blackley Neighbourhood Policing Team are supporting Dave as he gets in shape for the ten-day trip. Back at his home in Horwich, Bolton he has been training at a local boxing gym and has spent time cycling through the hills of Rivington to build up stamina for the trip.

Dave has already raised over £3,000 through a variety of sports events including a race night at a local pub and a sports memorabilia auction. To support PC Stebbings you can go to:
