Handed on a plate

Thursday, 16 July, 2009

POLICE Community Support Officers are again teaming up in the fight against number plate thefts.

PCSOs Brian Hutton, Mandi Lapthorne and Luke Jenkins will be offering to fit free tamper-proof screws to car registration plates on Wednesday (July 22) at the Asda car park in Dunstable.

It is the latest in a series of increasingly popular events run under Operation CAPS - which stands for the Car Accessory Protection Scheme.

Safer Neighbourhood Officer, PC Anthony Seamarks, said: "Criminals steal number plates and attach them to other vehicles to commit crime. These crimes include making off without payment from filling stations where number plates are regularly recorded by CCTV.

"Our advice to motorists is to get your vehicle's identity protected by coming along to a CAPS event. It's a lot more convenient than finding your number plates have been stolen."
