Determine the facts. Determine your future.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is a truly fascinating place to work. From safeguarding the UK’s food and drink supplies, to improving the environment – we play a major role in daily life. Now, so could you. As our HEO Investigator, you’ll conduct criminal and regulatory investigations on behalf of several parts of the Defra group., playing an active role in a fast-paced environment.

Based flexibly at one of Defra’s hubs in York, Bristol or London, you’ll take on a number of investigations at any one time, and you’ll be responsible for your own caseload. It will be your job to research legislation, advise the client, agree investigation plans, gather evidence, make court applications, conduct searches of premises, obtain witness statements, conduct interviews, prepare case files for CPS prosecutors, and manage CPIA disclosure responsibilities. And you’ll undertake all of this in accordance with current legislation, codes of practice and recognised best practice.

As you’d expect, we’re looking for someone with qualified investigator status (PINS, ACIP or equivalent) or significant experience in the criminal investigation field. A practical understanding of PACE, RIPA, CPIA, DPA, HRA, Theft & Fraud Acts is essential, as is experience of witness statement writing and interview techniques (such as the PEACE model). Due to the travel involved with this role, you’ll need to hold a full UK driving licence and you’ll be comfortable with some unsocial hours.

Crucially, you’ll be a team-player who supports colleagues through change and consistently brings out the best in people. You’ll be great at collaborating with and delivering through others, as well as working to short deadlines. In fact, this is a great opportunity for your own development, as the team welcome support in all areas when deadlines are tight. No day in this role is ever the same, so being versatile is extremely important. If you can help us determine the facts and strengthen the basis of each case, we’ll help you establish a more rewarding career – with all the benefits and opportunity Defra has to offer.
