Community volunteers work unpaid in a diverse range of roles alongside police officers and police staff and are asked to merely give between two and four hours of their time per week.
There are no formal qualifications needed in the role of community volunteer but honesty, integrity and basic numeracy and literacy are essential. Volunteers should also have a positive and friendly approach towards the public, an ability to work in a team and a willingness to learn new skills.
All tasks undertaken by community volunteers are intended to assist or supplement the work undertaken by police officers and police staff. By helping out on the front enquiry desk volunteers are able to free up officers and allow them to spend more time on patrol, attending duties.
Community volunteers support the work of front enquiry desk officers by dealing with enquiries from members of the public and answering telephone calls. Other duties could include checking driving documentation, incident recording and recording lost and found property.
Some community volunteers also help monitor CCTV footage, carry out live monitoring on request and liase with emergency staff in summoning a police response.
