PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Provide support to the Area Operations and Central CJU on the preparation of prosecution files.

In close liaison with the Area Operations Officer-in-Case and CPS lawyers, manage the building of prosecution files to ensure that the evidence contained therein meets the requirements for a successful prosecution.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• To provide advice and guidance in legislative issues, evidence, procedures and quality standards to staff.

• Manage the building of appropriate files for prosecution, utilizing CJU and other resources as appropriate, ensuring all submissions for evidential sufficiency, procedural correctness and content are in accordance with MOG and force practice and procedures.

• To act as Disclosure Officer ensuring that appropriate legislative requirements and guidelines are met, primarily dealing with unused material in accordance with the Joint Operation Instructions for the disclosure of unused material (JOPI).

• Action CPS memo requests in appropriate cases.

• To liaise with the OIC and CPS lawyers at all appropriate stages. Where the CPS is considering the discontinuance of a prosecution, to mediate on behalf of the Police, as appropriate, through liaison with the lawyers and operational staff.

• To action Summons File cases in liaison with Area operational staff and where appropriate CPS lawyers, and in accordance with legal and Force requirements..

• Actively support the relationships, systems and processes between the satellite and central CJU and Area, taking a participative role in identifying improvements in working practices.

• To interview witnesses and obtain statements.

• Identify and notify management of good practices and shortfalls in evidence gathering processes.

• At the discretion of the CJU Manager provide support to Area operational staff in preparing files.
