In September 2007, the FSA joined forces with Police Mutual, an established provider of workplace financial education, to deliver the Financial Services Authority’s (FSA) Financial Capability material to the Police Service.

To mark the launch of the partnership, Police Mutual used its 1,000 strong introducer network to distribute 275,000 free financial capability CD-ROMS across the Police Service.

The CD-ROM is a fully interactive learning resource covering the main financial capability topics as well as sections personalised to the Police.

Financial Capability seminars for Police Officers, Police Staff, Specials and PCSO’s have now been added to the range of Police Mutual courses and provide attendees with a greater understanding of their current financial status, what their future needs will be and how to plan in order to meet these needs.

Police Mutual has delivered 25 seminars to 5 forces and the Scottish Police College with over 600 people having attended so far. In addition, there are 60 presentations planned throughout the Avon and Somerset Force.

These seminars are free to attend and delivered in the workplace by Police Mutual’s trained financial professionals.

James Henderson, Sales and Marketing Director at Police Mutual said: “Police Mutual has helped the FSA to personalise the Financial Capability material to the needs of the Police Service.

We want to empower Police Officers and Police Staff to make decisions about their financial welfare and we’ve used our experience to provide them with relevant examples to give them a greater understanding of their own benefits package.”

Continued James: “We see the FSA’s Financial Capability material as an extension of our existing work.

Last year alone over 27,000 members of the Police Service attended our courses and presentations so it’s natural for Police Mutual to support the FSA with one of their key initiatives.”

Chris May, FSA Employer Relationship added: “We’ve developed an excellent relationship with Police Mutual and by working together we are making a real difference to the financial well-being of Police Officers and Police Staff.”

Police Mutual has also developed its website, www.pmas.co.uk, to feature the FSA’s tools and guides. These have been designed to help individuals review their finances and plan for a secure future.

Visitors to the new look site can learn how to take control of their finances; use a budget calculator to work out how much money they have each month after deducting all their financial outgoings and take a debt test to see how likely they are to have problems with their borrowings over the next year. There are also guides to budgeting for the costs of children and different children’s savings products; how to protect yourself against fraud and tips on purchasing financial products.

As the U.K.’s largest affinity friendly society, with over 180,000 members nationwide and assets of over £1.1 billion, Police Mutual is dedicated to providing savings, investment, pensions, mortgages and insurance products and financial education exclusively to the Police Family.
