Tuesday, 05 April, 2011

Cleveland Police have been shortlisted in two categories for the prestigious Emergency Services Awards.

The Force has been nominated for the Police Force of the Year, along with Hertfordshire Constabulary, Lancashire Constabulary, Northumbria Police and Surrey Police, as well as being up for Best Control Room with London Ambulance Service, the East of England Ambulance Service and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The awards engage with organisations and individual projects across the Police, Fire and Ambulance sectors, and recognise outstanding achievement by teams working to deliver effective and innovative public services.

The event is being supported by the Association of Police Authorities, the Ambulance Service Network, and the British Fire Services Association. It takes place at the Emirates Stadium in London on Thursday 7th April.

Chief Constable of Cleveland Police Sean Price said: “I’m delighted that the Force is being recognised at a national level. In Cleveland we are seeing the lowest ever levels of recorded crime, which is down to the sheer hard work of our officers, staff and partner agencies working together with local communities to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

“The partnership working with Steria in the Control Room has seen the introduction of a call back system of people who have had contact with Cleveland Police and I am pleased to report that we are seeing some really positive results. The vast majority of people called back have been satisfied with the service provided and almost a half graded it excellent. We look forward to improving on that figure in the future.”

Added Police Authority Chair Dave McLuckie “Once again this demonstrates the widespread recognition of the way here in Cleveland we have led the way in adopting new and innovative approaches to delivering effective and efficient policing for our local communities.

“Our decision to work with partners across a range of activities has enabled us to maximise resources available for front-line policing—and, of course, our contract with Steria, as well as generating £50million in savings, has protected jobs and enabled us to introduce improvements such as the call-back system.”

Chief Operating Officer at Steria, Gavin Chapman, commented yet further: "Our working partnership with Cleveland in the delivery of control room and a host of other outsourced services are really delivering benefits. The Control Room nomination is testament to the professionalism and dedication of staff who have adapted to new technology and new ways of working and delivered consistently strong performance; since Service Commencement in October 2010. 98% of 999 calls have been answered within 10 seconds and over 98% of citizens are satisfied with control room service - it’s been a fantastic start in our work with our partner Cleveland.”
