Met officers receive commendations

On Wednesday 9th June 2010, The Brent Borough Commander's Commendation and Awards Ceremony took place at the Pitchview Room, Wembley Stadium.

Over 50 members of the Metropolitan Police Service received a commendation by the Brent Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Mark Toland. The citations were read out by Brent Police Senior Management Team members in front of their colleagues and guests and the commendations were presented by Commander Kevin Hurley.

In addition, commendations were given to members of the public; Mr Kalpesh Patel for outstanding bravery in tackling a man armed with a Samuri sword and a BB gun, Mr Brian Hanrahan for outstanding bravery in tackling a suspect armed with a knife who had seriously injured two people, Mr Ghazi Rahim for outstanding bravery in confronting a man armed with a knife who was threatening others, whereby he sustained a life threatening injury, Mrs Helen Snow for outstanding bravery in protecting three young vulnerable girls from a violent male with mental health problems, Mr Lewis Burton for outstanding actions that saved the life of an elderly lady who had been stabbed several times with a knife and Mr Stephen Afonso for outstanding bravery by protecting a women who had been stabbed by an armed and dangerous suspect and who as a consequence was stabbed in the arm.

For the third year Brent borough presented the 'Annual Awards' to members of staff, including 'The Chris Roberts Award' for Probationer Constable of the Year in memory of PC Roberts who died whilst on duty in December 2007. PC Oisín Daly received the award for Probationer Constable of the year.

Borough Commander Mark Toland said: "As the Borough Commander this is my favourite ceremony.It is a great opportunity to acknowledge the good work of my staff and colleagues.During the ceremony I awarded certificates for outstanding acts of bravery, professionalism, dedication to duty and performance at the highest level. The stars of the show were those who received awards, however I am very conscious of the guests that attended with them who support them all year round.I have no doubt that they were amazed by some of the actions taken by the recipients of the awards.

"Today is also my last day serving at Brent as I am retiring after 30 years' service. My four years here have flown by and Brent is without doubt the best place that I have ever worked.

I want to say thank you to all of my staff, partners and all those who live and work in Brent for your support and enthusiasm. Brent is a brilliant borough and I am really delighted that my current Superintendent Operations Matthew Gardner will be taking over from me. Thank you for everything that you have done for me and I would like to wish you all the very best for the
